Peru in International Gastronomy Rankings

Peruvian cuisine is consolidating itself among the best in the world, competing at the level of Italian and Mexican cuisine. Peruvian restaurants receive recognition in prestigious rankings such as Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants, The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, World Culinary Awards, Taste Atlas, and Premios Summum.

THE WORLD’S 50 BEST RESTAURANTS 2024 - 2025

The restaurant Maido, led by Mitsuharu Tsumura, was awarded the best restaurant in the world on June 19, 2025, climbing to the champions’ podium and entering the “Best of The Best” Hall of Fame, where the restaurant Central is also listed. This list is created by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants and includes those who have held the first-place position. Maido specializes in Nikkei cuisine, which is the fusion of Japanese and Peruvian cooking.

Renowned chef Gastón Acurio declared upon hearing the ranking results that besides Maido being an exceptional restaurant, the whole country should feel proud. Also, the restaurant Kjolle ranked ninth, with chef Pía León being the only woman in the Top 10.

The 2024 ceremony of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants took place on June 5 at Wynn Las Vegas. The event was organized by the media company William Reed, founded in 1862. Peru was present on the list from positions 1 to 50 with Maido at 5th place, Kjolle at 16th, and Mayta at 4th. The chef of Maido, Mitsuharu “Micha” Tsumura, received the Damm Chefs Choice Award 2024 at the same ceremony. Additionally, in the 51 to 100 list, restaurants Mérito ranked 55th and Mil 73rd.

The restaurant Mérito specializes in Peruvian-Venezuelan cuisine, and its chef Juan Luis Martínez returned to the top 100 list. Another restaurant by Virgilio Martínez and Pía León, Mil, located in Cusco in the Sacred Valley of the Incas—Peru, at 3,600 meters above sea level—is a new contender and also among the top 100. Meanwhile, Central moved to the “Best of the Best” Hall of Fame, an exclusive list inaugurated in 2019 that honors past winners.

The list is compiled by about 1,000 people committed to the gastronomic field. The first list of the world’s 50 best restaurants appeared in 2002 in London. The group of judges includes anonymous journalists, chefs, and gourmands who cannot vote for restaurants with which they have financial ties and must have visited the restaurants within the last 18 months. The second part of the list is published one week earlier.

In 2023, Central was crowned the best restaurant in the world, taking first place and entering the Hall of Fame. Maido ranked 6th, Kjolle 48th, and Mayta 47th.
